Mountain hut Pod Ježo is located in the hamlet of Kuščarji at the panoramic ridge road on the Kolovrat of Kanal below the slopes of Ježa at the altitude of 740 m. The location is perfect for hiking – undemanding ascents to the surrounding peaks (Ježa, Bukova ježa, Deveti konfin, Platena, Na gradu) as well as cycling. In the vicinity of the hut, one can explore the remains from World War One or walk to the pools of the Idrija river, the Doblarac gorge and to many viewpoints with a view of the Soča valley, the Julian Alps, the Veneto region, Matajur and the Friuli lowlands all the way to the sea.

Ježa is a peak of 949 m on the hillside of Kolovrat. From the top, where one can find a box with a special visitors’ book and a stamp, an extraordinary view of the surrounding hills and the Trnovo Forest Plateau can be enjoyed, and through the trees a part of the Julian Alps can be seen too.

Step-by-step route description

A marked undemanding mountain trail leads from the mountain hut Pod Ježo to the Ježa peak.

From the parking lot at the mountain hut Pod Ježo, we cross the macadam road and head in the direction of Očna, Na Gradu and Ježa. From the road, the path continues through the forest and begins to rise steeply. After about 15 minutes of walk, the path becomes more gradual leading to a marked crossroads. Here, a path branches off right to Očno and Deveti konfin, nevertheless, we continue along the main path which begins to rise through the forest. After a few minutes of ascent, we get out of the forest and reach the grassy top of Ježa.
